Resistant Materials covers a wide range of activities based on designing and making products from materials such as wood, metal and plastics. Whether you are interested in a practical career, in product design, engineering, manufacturing, interior design or simply enjoy making things then this course has a lot to offer.
This GCSE course requires products or prototypes to be designed and made and is suitable for students who enjoy creative designing and making, as well as those that prefer a more structured, instructional approach. Books are assessed regularly and are scrutinized by all members of the department to provide consistency.
We use formative and summative assessment through questioning and end of module testing. GCSE Resistant Materials builds on knowledge gained during key stage 3 and covers a wide range of activities using the full range of materials experienced at KS3 and many new materials and processes.

A larger, more challenging project provides the assessment marks for the GCSE. Their resulting design folder and product will therefore be a culmination of studies in their specialist area. Resistant Materials is delivered in a dynamic, innovative and exciting curriculum where students have the opportunity to explore, create and make various quality projects.

The projects we complete are related the development of expertise in handling wooden, metal and plastic products while developing their understanding of real world manufacturing and CAD CAM.
Extra Opportunities Students are welcome to attend at lunch time or afterschool to finish off any outstanding work, In addition there will be opportunities for students to attend lunchtime clubs aimed towards specific groups. Practical products are marked according to current levels of progress descriptors.
Students will complete a series of shorter projects focussing on individual materials designed to improve their knowledge, designing and practical skills. In addition to the generic element of the course students are able to choose one of the three specialist materials areas, including Graphic Products, Resistant Materials or Textiles Technology.
